Glen Burnie Crowns 14 Champs

It was another good turnout for the Glen Burnie, Maryland SPA tournament with 37 teams battling for 13 titles.

The May 29-June 2 tournament crowned champs in 50 AAA, 50 Major, 50 Major Plus, 55 AAA, 55 Major, 60 AAA, 60 Major, 60 Major Plus, 65 AAA, 65 Major, 70 AAA, 75 AAA and 75 Major.

Sneaky Petes got their money's worth in the 55 Division playing five bracket games to win the title. In order to win they beat Hartford County 16-12, lost to Maryland Cougars 13-15, beat Hartford 17-12, beat the Cougars 13-10 and 17-10.

The 55 Major crown went to Dominoes who swept the field with wins over High Street (22-2, 19-18) and Disconnect 22-20 Sweet Construction was the fourth team in the bracket.

Four teams competed for the 50 AAA crown with WVA Hotshots beating Roadhouse Blues 12-9 in the “if” game after losing to them 25-18 in the previous game. Gaithersburg was third and Md. Classics fourth.

In the six-team 50 majors Phoenix Tube ran the table with wins over Elmwood Sports (21-14), BH Maintenance (17-14) and Team Elite (33-22, 17-9).

Team Elite was second followed by Elmwood Sports, BH Maintenance, RB Lawn Care and Roebell Paint.

 

Team USA beat Mid Atlantic 21-16 and 16-1 to win the 50 Major Plus title.

Northern Virginia Force and Eagle Tavern played it very, very close in the 60 AAA bracket. The Force won two games (18-17, 16-15) with the Tavern taking the second game 21-18. Final runs scored showed the Tavern with 53 and the Force with 52.

High Street Bucs did just enough to win the three-team 60 major beating Goodman Tri County 9-8 in the title game and Sweet Construction 13-9

Promotion downed J.G. Drywall 19-17 and 22-13 offsetting a middle game 13-22 loss to take the two-team 60 Major plus crown.

Northern Virginia Force defeated High Street Bucs 22-14 and 25-15 to take the 65 AAA title while the Bucs claimed the 65 Major crown. Hamel Builders and Jersey Masters Red rounded out the field.

Five teams competed for the 70 AAA title with Spicer Properties downing the Jersey Masters 21-5 in the finals. Spicer also beat the Masters earlier 12-7 as well as Steel City 22-8.

Stahl Post #30 finished third followed by Steel City and Hamel Builders 70's.

Hamel 75's took the 75 major bracket and Monkey Joe's the 75 AAA title.

“It was a good group of teams,” SPA director Larry Milliron said. “It was nice to see the Glen Burnie add new teams and show the tournament is back. I would expect 50 teams are possible in 2018.”
